Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 2-Miller relates an anecdote, which is based on one of her own summer camp experiences, in rollicking, rhyming verse. Throughout the story, an enthusiastic, big brown bear opts out of myriad campground diversions in favor of hanging out in the cabin and on the bunk of a mortified little girl in pigtails. Then comes the punch line: The child says, "And after he snoozed/and danced on my bed,/And after he jumped/and bounced on my bed,/And after he almost fell/on his head-/That naughty old bear-/He POOPED on my bed!" As far as kids are concerned, this is a fail-safe storyhour crowd-pleaser. Parents and other adults, however, may be underwhelmed at best. Slavin's exuberant cartoon art is rendered in acrylics on gessoed paper. This gleefully perverse inversion of "Goldilocks" has enough child appeal to justify purchase, but be prepared for some parents to groan out loud when they read the last page.
