Male warblers grow colorful feathers during the spring mating season. Male moose compete for a female by head-butting each other with their antlers. Female ospreys are fed and protected by their mates while they hatch their eggs. Whether it's to attract, fight for or protect a mate, animals interact in some remarkable ways. Using concise language and realistic illustrations, this title in the Animal Behavior series takes a resourceful approach to exploring animal life.

Gr. 2-5. From insects and worms to birds and mammals, this colorfully illustrated introduction considers the who, what, when, where and how of mating. Though not detailed about the mechanics of reproduction, the book discusses matters such as amusing, bizarre, or aggressive courtship behaviors and the reasons certain animals mate at specific times of the year. The text includes many examples--five million mated pairs of Chinstrap penguins gather in a single colony; a male scorpion fly gives his prospective mate a paralyzed insect or a ball of spit. Tinted with colorful washes, the attractive artwork shows many different animals in a variety of habitats. The wide array of mating behaviors in the animal kingdom gets good coverage here.
