In this title in the Animal Behavior series, kids will find out which animals hibernate and why, the difference between true hibernators and deep sleepers, where animals hibernate, what happens while they hibernate, and much more. Whether to avoid extreme weather, conserve energy or survive on meager resources, animals hibernate in some unexpected ways. Packed with illustrations, facts, activities and easy-to-do experiments, Animals Hibernating is an innovative approach to understanding animal life.

Gr. 3-5. Hickman's elementary discussion of hibernation cites many examples of "extreme sleepers" to show the wide variations in length and degree of both true hibernation and related states, such as "daily torpor" and estivation. The author presents reasonably specific information about metabolic changes and related topics with engaging clarity ("Painted turtle hatchlings, or babies, can survive temperatures as low as -4 degrees C (25 degrees F). Over half of their body water turns to ice, their heart stops and their blood stops flowing"), and Stephens' carefully detailed painted reptiles, birds, amphibians, and mammals--small and large, most posed in natural settings--add plenty of visual appeal. Several easy science activities complete the nice package. John Peters
