About the Authors
YES Mag: Canada?s Science Magazine for Kids is an award-winning periodical that makes science, technology, engineering and mathematics exciting and fun for kids.
Rose Cowles has won awards for both illustration and design. She lives in Victoria, British Columbia.

In this large-format book, the editors of YES Mag, a Canadian science magazine for children, offer six stories of scientists who used detective skills in their work. The cases considered are the New York typhoid outbreak of 1906; the precipitous population decline of vultures in India, Nepal, and Pakistan in 1999; the discovery of a 4,000-year-old corpse preserved in a glacier; a successful search for diamonds in Canada's far north; the discovery of the structure of DNA; and the search for the cause of a mysterious plane crash in 1998. Sidebars fill in related facts and stories, while five projects present hands-on activities. The volume includes no documentation. Along with many photos, quirky, colorful illustrations sometimes offer touches of humor as well as visual information. Recommended for larger collections. Carolyn Phelan
