About the Authors

Pauline Clarke is Superintendent of Schools for the Inner City District of the Winnipeg School Division, Manitoba, Canada. In her role, she emphasizes assessment for learning, integration of the arts, Aboriginal education, and building school leadership across the district. Ms. Clarke has written articles for journals and presents at conferences across Canada and in England.


Thompson Owens was a classroom teacher for over 40 years in Canada, China, and Japan. During his last nine years of teaching he was a support teacher for the Inner City District of the Winnipeg School Division, Manitoba, Canada. A common thread in all of Mr. Owens’s years of teaching was helping more students succeed. Until his death, he continued to contribute to education as a consultant, speaker, and writer.


Ruth Sutton was a secondary teacher and deputy principal of an inner-city school in Manchester, England. She also taught on exchange in a senior high school in Ohio, United States. After five years as a school district assessment consultant, Ruth spent two years as senior adviser (assistant superintendent) for secondary education. She then became an independent consultant, specializing in assessment for learning and school improvement. Most of her current work is in Scotland and Wales, and in various provinces of Canada.
