Synopsis

WHEN GUCCI CAME FIRST provides an in-depth and honest look into the life of a young woman searching for love and acceptance. From family circumstances to sex, drugs and therapy, Mia Williamson a.k.a. Kalico (cal-ih-ko) Jones covers and uncovers it all.

Funny, sad and sometimes unbelievable, WHEN GUCCI CAME FIRST shows the affects of striving to obtain material possessions through self-manipulating behavior and denial and how the continuation of these behaviors results in the development of cycles. Combine that with struggling to forgive a mother, dealing with the absence of a father and trying to understand her purpose in life, the author at the age of 31 proves that though things were difficult at times and goals were put aside, when you believe in yourself you can overcome anything.

WHEN GUCCI CAME FIRST is a must read, must have book for woman and like the decision to finally get her life together, writing this book was one of the best decisions Mia Williamson could have made.

Prelude... I can't believe I'm stuck here, in the house, with a baby, while HIS ass is out running the streets. I have no money, no food and I'm all the way in Spring Valley.

I called my friend Monet. She left her job and came right over, handed me $100.00 (of which I haven't paid her back to this date) and proceeded to give me the advice that every woman in my situation gets from that one girlfriend, who even though you are down in the dumps feels she has to give you in order to KEEP IT REAL...

"Girl you need to leave his ass!"

"This shit is crazy, in the house with a newborn and no money, he can't be serious!" she continued... "Where's the food? Where's the pampers?"

That's when it HIT me, my ass needed to put together that FUCK YOU money quick. I had to not only exit, but exit with a kid. Where did this go wrong?

I checked the time; it was 1 o'clock in the afternoon, is he okay? And if he is okay, where is he?

The phone rang.

Ring...ring...

"Hello" (it was Famous R&B Singer)

"Yo what up Kalico, yo "Wiz" (short for Wisdom), just left my house, he's on his way home, aight?"

I said okay and hung up the phone. I was on fire. How DARE Mr. Famous R&B Singer call my house to tell me that MY MAN was on his way home at 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

Where in the hell was he all night? I put the baby in her crib and waited for him to open the door. It's now 2:30pm and homeboy is just walking in the house! He's drunk and shit...looking pitiful, talking about, "I know...I know...I fucked up, I'm sorry...you mad?"

I took a deep breath, no this nigga did not just ask me if I was mad, he must have bumped his fucking head on the way upstairs. I closed my eyes and thought to myself...I should slap his ass but he's so drunk he probably wouldn't feel it. I will be calm...I will not hit him...I will just leave...I will be calm...I will not hit him...I will just leave...I will be calm...I will not hit him...I will just leave.

I looked at him and in a damn near whisper said, "Yes, I am mad, I'm furious, you're a father now, we are a family, this is crazy...I'm leaving!"

Two weeks later...I was gone!
