From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5 Candid color photographs and very brief texts characterize these two books. Each reveals a child's way of life within a context of narration about the native country. Nine-year-old Thet Way lives in Hninzigen, Burma, where his father makes bamboo chairs and his mother markets a branch called tanaka for medicinal purposes. Thet Way participates in the Shinbyu Ceremony whereby he becomes a boy Buddhist monk and lives in a monastery for a week. Yati, 11, lives in a small village on the island of Penang in Malaysia with her grandparents while her parents are studying in the United States. The final third of each book presents a brief but thorough overview of each country, including its history, culture, ethnicity, language, religion, education, sports, art, government, and geographyall highly suitable for reports. Glossaries of the native language, maps, bibliographies, and research project and activities suggestions are all presented in an inviting format that encourages the use of the library. Yati's story has a different format from Wee's We Live in Malaysia and Singapore (Watts, 1985) in that the focus on only one family allows for more depth. The Land and People of Burma (Lippincott, 1968, o.p.) by Landry is more comprehensive but outdated. Pamela M. Greene, Beverly Hills Public Library
