ea. vol: unpaged. bibliog. (My First Easy and Fun Bks.). CIP. Gareth Stevens. 1987. PLB $8.95. PreSchool-Grade 1 Two pedestrian examples of the concept book. All About Shapes is the better of the two, featuring a clown-like magician who performs tricks using square handkerchiefs, cir cular rings, etc. Shapes such as cones and cylinders are included; they are pictured as hollow containers, which reinforces the idea that they are three- dimensional. Colored-pencil illustra tions are bright but unremarkable. In All About Sounds, Daisy the cow has fallen asleep in the middle of the road. The text consists mainly of a catalog of the human and animal sounds made in an attempt to awaken her. They appear as verbs in the past tense barked, buzzed, etc.so that the game of re peating the noises in the appropriate place doesn't work. Pale watercolor and pencil illustrations, awkwardly done, add nothing to the overall effect. Both books end with a list of suggested activities and additional reading. Many from the latter, such as Jan Pienkows ki's Shapes (S. & S., 1981) and Marga ret Wise Brown's Noisy Book (Harper, 1939; o.p.) are vastly superior to these offerings. Stick with the old favor ites. Lucy Young Clem, Evansville Vanderburgh County Pub . Lib . , Ind.
