Grade 5-8 The authors have attempted to reveal both the saintliness and humanness of these three people. The biographies give a brief account of the subject's early life, but are developed enough to satisfy readers as to the reasons that Father Damien, Mother Theresa, and Gandhi pursued their "calling." The text reads easily; however, the use of the vernacular detracts from the expository text, i.e., "Mother Teresa soon sent them packing"; "Indian National Congress was a group of middle-class wind bags." One hopes that the use of photographs from the film Gandhi will not cause readers to wonder if the text has been embellished from the media. The crispness and vividness of the color photographs is uneven but does not detract from the overall quality of the books. The pictures reproduced from old black-and-white photographs, although grainy, speckled, and occasionally blurred, reinforce the reality and authenticity of the text.
