A biography of the author of "The Feminine Mystique" who helped found the National Organization for Women in 1966

Grade 6-9-- Blau weaves together clear descriptions of the social, political, and economic conditions of the 60s and 70s, a time ripe for changes on all fronts, with the highlights of this brilliant woman's personal and professional life. This biography is direct and straightforward but a bit dry for recreational reading. For that purpose, better selections are Betty Friedan: Fighter for Women's Rights (Enslow, 1990) by Sondra Henry and Emily Taitz, or Milton Meltzer's Betty Friedan: A Voice for Women's Rights (Viking, 1985). This title and the Henry-Taitz book both include tidbits of information that the other leaves out, but the information is of minor importance and does not detract from either work. Black-and-white home quality photographs, many of which appear in the Enslow biography, are interspersed, not always in chronological sequence, throughout the text. --April L.
