Grade 8 Up-- Cockcroft's study is more than a biography. In an easy - to - read, objective style requiring no background research, he introduces the political history of Nicaragua by examining the rise of the Sandinista movement, the overthrow of Somoza's regime, United States foreign policy in Central America , and , most importantly, the emergence of a young freedom fighter who became president. Incidently, Cockcroft's work is an update of John Stockwell's title (Chelsea, 1989). Although the table of contents is vague, the index is good, and numerous black-and-white white photos elucidate the text. A welcome addition to the existing literature on Nicaragua. --L. R.
