Synopsis
First formulated in 1965 by Ronald L. Akers and Robert Burgess, the social learning theory of crime integrated Edwin H. Sutherland's differential association theory with behavioral learning theory. One of the most widely accepted and applied approaches to criminal and deviant behavior, it is also one of the most misinterpreted, misstated, and misapplied theories in criminal justice research and literature.
This book publishes for the first time in a single volume an in-depth and authoritative discussion of the background, concepts, development, modifications, and empirical tests of social learning theory. Akers begins with a personal account of his involvement in criminology and the origins of his influential perspective. He then traces the intellectual history of Sutherland's differential association theory and the first statement of social learning theory, providing a comprehensive explication of his approach to illegal behavior. Akers reviews the research on various correlates and predictors of crime and delinquency that are designed to be, or that can be readily interpreted as, operational measures of differential association, reinforcement, and other social learning concepts. He also reports on specific empirical tests of social learning theory.
The volume concludes with a proposal for a new integrated macro/micro theory of social learning and social structure that links the epidemiology and group differences in crime to individual conduct, and a cogent discussion of the implications of social learning theory for criminology and public policy.

About the Author
Ronald L. Akers is Director of the Center for Studies in Criminology and Law at the University of Florida. He served as President of the American Society of Criminology and is a recipient of the Edwin H. Sutherland Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to criminological theory and research. He is the author of numerous books, including Drugs, Alcohol, and Society and Criminological Theories: Introduction and Evaluation. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.
