Four stories and two plays explore the ways in which travel relates to contemporary life and represents different "states" of mind

Aksyonov creates satiric fantasy worlds that seem surprisingly true to life. The stories and plays in Quest for an Island show how one's "state" of mind is a kind of cultural politics -- or travel, depending on your point of view.
The constant in these four stories and two plays, dating from 1967 to 1981 and translated by various hands, is their central voice: a man roughly the author's age much afflicted by what was once dubbed "existential anguish." Otherwise the works vary wildly, ranging in tone from burlesque fantasy to tender irony and in setting from Moscow to Corsica to a world "outside of space and time"; they mock and echo writers from Maeterlinck to Updike. "The Hollow Herring," an elegy to Russian life written shortly after the USSR revoked Aksyonov's passport, stranding him here, is outstanding. Not for browsers, but interested readers will find these pieces of the Aksyonov puzzle provocative. Mary F. Zirin, Altadena, Cal.
