Trisha Waichulaitis and Gail Benton have collaborated on storytimes at the City of Mesa Library for the past eleven years. They received the Sharon G. Womaack Award in 1998 for sharing their ideas as presenters at four of the Arizona Library Association s Annual Conferences. Ms. Waichulaitis and Ms. Benton also create and present workshops for the Arizona Reading Program, The Arizona Library Institute, and other library conferences.
An excellent guide for teachers, librarians, day-care providers, and homeschooling parents of preschoolers. The six chapters represent six themed programs that include a welcome song, a read-aloud book, and various enrichment activities such as fingerplays, props, songs, coloring projects, and games. The accompanying CD includes 14 songs appropriate for the specific themes. The recordings and the authors' voices are of average quality, but children will respond to the lyrics, rhythms, and repetitions. There are plentiful and easy-to-follow diagrams for flannel-board and magnetic story characters, puppets, and game parts. New teachers will find this book extremely helpful in presenting programs to their young students, and experienced programmers will find new and original material to add to their repertoires. The one reservation in using the book is the length of time needed to prepare the flannel-board and magnetic-strip pieces, puppets, and game parts. Volunteer adults skilled in making craft items or those who have lots of spare time would solve that problem.

This book provides everything a librarian or teacher needs to present a 30-minute storytime for children aged 18 months through 5 years. Each of the six chapters covers a different theme (food, animals, deserts, beaches, colors, and clothes), and each includes an outline; a read-aloud book suggestion; fingerplay, flannel/magnetic/prop, or puppet-show scripts; patterns with step-by-step instructions; songs; a parent-and-child matching activity; and activity sheet handouts. A CD offers 12 original songs and activities written and performed by the authors. Those who can't use or can't find the single title suggested in each chapter will wish for more titles or the resources to locate them. Still, this resource is excellent for beginning librarians and teachers and for any professionals who seek new ideas to freshen up their repertoires. RBB
