Synopsis

Here is a handbook for planning and delivering innovative library services to one of today's fastest growing demographic groups: older adults. Chapters cover collection development (including large print materials, audio books, program kits, and assistive technologies), programming ideas (discussion groups, coffee clubs, cooking, intergenerational, travel and historical games), partnerships with other agencies, and outreach and homebound services. A special section lists print and online sources for tips from other librarians reaching out to an aging population.

From Booklist

Although it includes suggestions for working with homebound and visually impaired patrons, this manual aims to help librarians who want to attract and serve a much broader and more active audience. The emphasis is on the diversity of the aging population. The strategies and programming ideas come from public libraries in the U.S and Canada that responded to a questionnaire. Part 1 focuses on bringing seniors into the library by devising a comprehensive plan, building a meaningful collection, partnering with other agencies, grooming volunteers, and offering informing and entertaining programs that appeal to older patrons and to multigenerational groups. Part 2 provides guidance on delivering services where seniors live. Appendixes include practical advice from the contributors, electronic resources, book lists for senior programming, and ESL and international resources. This pragmatic manual should prove useful to any library needing to evaluate current offerings or to plan new or expanded services. RBB
