Tricia Suellentrop is the Teen Services Librarian for the Johnson County (KS) Library and teaches a Young Adult Services class for Emporia State University.
Consistent with previous editions, the authors seek to cultivate a "YAttitude" among their readers, which puts serving teens in the forefront. A core vocabulary of terms is listed at the beginning while core documents and an extensive bibliography are organized at the end. Not only are the building blocks of library services such as collection development, outreach, programs, booktalking, and teen space included, but the authors also discuss why they are important and why they work. Peppered throughout are examples of libraries successfully connecting with teens. This edition is a refreshing read for those who have been working with teens for years, and those who are just beginning the journey. Library school educators, administrators, and teachers will benefit from it as well. An upbeat, well-organized must-have for anyone working with this audience.–Kelly Czarnecki, Bloomington Public Library, IL

In this much-needed update, the authors present a comprehensive guide to the why and how of serving teens. Among the topics that are covered are customer service, collections, booktalking, space, promotion, and technology. There are many revisions in this edition, including changes and advances in teen services. The section on programming that was present in the first edition and absent from the second has been reintroduced. Two new chapters are "Outreach and Partnerships" and "Youth Involvement." Unlike previous editions, all of the forms and documents have been included in a single section. The book concludes with a detailed bibliography. Web resources are available on the book's Web site [http://www.connectingya.com]. The book would be useful to new and experienced young adult librarians as well as any librarians serving youth.
