To RFID Radio Frequency IDentification or not to RFID is one of the hottest debates in libraries today. This practical and straightforward manual lays out all the information you need to make a decision about whether or not RFID belongs in your library and how to select a vendor and implement the technology if the answer is yes. Diane Marie Ward, one of the nation s foremost experts in this area, shows you how to: develop a plan for specific types of libraries (public, academic, special, government, and more); solicit a request for proposal; work with vendors; implement and maintain your system; assure patron privacy; market new services; educate staff and patrons, and assess the success of your program. This easy-to understand manual includes detailed information on both equipment (tags, readers, security gates, networks) and uses (inventory, self-check in and out, material handling and sorting, security). The companion DVD demonstrates the technology s use in libraries that have already implemented it and can be used for both presentations to decision-making boards and committees, as well as a staff training tool.

Author Ward has published numerous articles on RFID, teaches a course as an adjunct for SUNY Buffalo on RFID, and even has her master’s in informatics with a focus on RFID. Containing 10 chapters, each with references, this guide is a very timely resource on the technology, with much practical information, including real-life situations gathered from interviews. For libraries even remotely considering RFID, this is the book to have, since it incorporates everything from developing a plan for specific types of libraries to vendor selection, installation, and implementation. The final chapter discusses privacy issues. Appendixes, or “pocket guides,” provide acronyms, RFID subject headings, and summaries of vendor surveys. Coming from a library that just purchased an RFID system, the reviewer wishes the book had come out six months earlier. --Christy Donaldson
...meets the needs of everyone involved in the decision making and implementation process....A useful book for those deciding or considering Radio Frequency Technology in their library, this work cannot be beat. --ARBA, March 2009
This practical guide takes the reader through all the steps. --Computers in Libraries, January 2008
She does the best job I've ever seen in explaining library applications for RFID with a strong focus on the benefits of using portable scanners for shelf reading and for locating mis-shelved material.... If you are thinking of doing an RFI, RFQ or RFP for RFID...this manual is a must. --Lori Bowen Ayre
