"Since most of you can't visit Scully's, I have brought my kitchen to you," says Scully, who owns a 13-table Beverly Hills establishment. Of course, an unlisted telephone number is one reason why many can't visit the fashionable eatery. ("I suppose this is a bit cocky," Scully acknowledges coyly.) The glamour in this volume is limited to its introduction, where Scully amusingly drops the names of famous guests in rapid succession. ("I'll never forget J. Edgar Hoover's delight at the taste of my enchiladas!") Unfortunately, the recipes themselves are all too ordinary. Traditional breakfast items include spinach omelet, fluffy yogurt pancakes, French toast, sliced oranges and chocolate waffles. Brunches or lunches feature Irish stew, cold curry soup, tuna melt and sauteed mushrooms on toast. Such desserts as honey cake and zabaglione or drinks like coffee brule and strawberry wine daiquiri complete the meal. Gilbar is the author of The Lunch Box Book.

Breakfast stretches to brunch and lunch in this friendly and useful cookbook. Most of us have only a routine idea of breakfast. Scully, owner of a Hollywood breakfast and lunch restaurant, prepares old faithfuls such as corn muffins, corned beef hash, and bread and butter pudding. But the recipes for anchovy salad, custard wild rice pudding, and a chicken liver pate made with blue cheese suggest what delights we are missing. Appropriate drinks, hot and cold, with and without alcohol, are included. Scully's style is an engaging blend of relaxed host and experienced chef. For larger collections. SP
