Book by Guterson, Ben

Ben Guterson is a highschool English teacher who lives on the Navajo reservation in northwestern New Mexico. His articles on the outdoors and Southwest culture have appeared in several regional publications, including New Mexico magazine and New Frontiers.
This lastest entry in the "Seasonal Guide" series (Scott Weidensaul's New England & New York, LJ 10/1/93) is a dandy book. Starting with January, it provides just what the subtitle says, but with enthusiasm. Each month includes brief descriptions of four major natural events, sights, gatherings, or views. The information is concise-for those who may already know what they would like to see and just need to know where to go-yet is descriptive enough to entice newcomers to explore. Specific road directions are provided to each location. Each month also includes "short takes," listing one or two additional events; and a "breakout," a section more descriptive of an especially interesting event for that month. Well written and nicely organized, this guide is strongly recommended for regional collections and encouraged for public libraries anywhere. (Index and maps not seen.)-Nancy Moeckel, Miami Univ.
