About the Author:
A lifelong westerner, Marlene Blessing is a published poet, essayist, and cookbook author with a love of travel.

The first essay in this anthology describes the long anticipated "girls' road trip" of two sisters in their late seventies. Asked why their journey was deferred for so many years, they explain, "Well, there was always someone else who insisted on riding along . . . kids, husbands, or you name it. We just never were free." Blessing's collection is a celebration of the freedom that has allowed succeeding generations of women to explore the West--on foot, by car, in pairs, or alone--and she has assembled a spirited and diverse circle of writers for that purpose. Susan Ewing writes with engaging spirit and candor of her foray into dog sledding in the Yukon, and Susan Zwinger's encounter with "The Last Cowwoman of the Escalante" is related with zest. Other journeys are spiritual, notably Linda Hogan's quietly joyful depiction of a sweat-lodge ceremony she shared with her daughters.
