My Vice Is Verses reflects the experiences of the author's life dedicated to family, church, country and his fellow man. The poems describe love, life, frustrations, triumphs, humor, and contemplation of the state of mankind. They plea for tolerance, peace, love, and understanding. Written in the traditional format including sonnets and ballads, some poems are several pages in length while others are short four liners. The author follows the style of classical poets such as Whittier, Blake, and Benet, but also shows a touch of Ogden Nash. The poems cover a wide variety of subjects, forms, rhythms, and rhyming schemes rather than sticking to one rigid format. While the discipline of the sonnet is present, the freedom to let the content and ideas dictate the form of the poem rather than to force the ideas into one classical structure is clearly evident. The variety of forms and subjects including patriotism, politics, war, humor, life, and philosophy is such that every reader should find poems to appreciate and enjoy.
