Review

Learn Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 is a handy, fast-moving introduction to Microsoft's latest release of its SQL Server relational database. This is a very visual approach to the material--the various components of SQL Server are presented using screen shots at nearly every turn.

This title is not an extensive presentation of the subject but rather an overview of the most important topics and the major components of the product. The easy-to-read language makes it quite a quick read and perfect for a speedy look at SQL Server 7. The topics are well-presented, set in the correct context, and illustrated with real-world examples; however, this tutorial is aimed at the user rather than the administrator.

Many of the product's newest features, such as database diagrams, OLAP, and Data Transformation Services, are clearly demonstrated, making the book useful for SQL Server veterans who want to get up to speed with the product's latest innovations. Almost half of the book is devoted to a reference guide for the Transact-SQL query language. A 120-day trial version of SQL Server is included as well.

If you're looking for a comprehensive study of this important database, you might do better with a bulkier title. But if you're just getting your feet wet and don't want to be overpowered at the start of your studies, this is an easy way to get going with SQL Server. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: SQL Server architecture, database diagramming, SQL language, replication, stored procedures, tools overview, online analytical processing, data transformation service, and backup and recovery.
