The Basic Bookshelf for Eyecare Professionals is a series that provides fundamental and advanced material with a clinical approach to clinicians and students. A special effort was made to include information needed for the certification exams in ophthalmic and optometric assisting, as well as for surgical assistants, opticians, plus low vision, and contact lens examiners.
Optics, Retinoscopy, and Refractometry combines information on all three topics to allow the reader to better understand and measure the patient's refractive error. The text opens with an explanation of physical, geometric, and physiologic optics, including the schematic eye. This is followed by a discussion of retinoscopy and refractometry, covering equipment, detailed how-to's, and trouble-shooting. The Appendices contain data on the metric system, units of measurement, metric conversions, abbreviations, and refractometric exercises.

Al Lens began his ophthalmic career in 1986 at the Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His keen interest in learning and teaching put him in the position of training ophthalmic assistants. After writing The Ophthalmic Assistant Guide, Al began lecturing across North America at various conferences. His teaching has taken him as far away as Saudi Arabia. He is author of LASIK for Technicians and coauthor of Ocular Anatomy and Physiology and Cataracts and Glaucoma. The latter 2 publications are part of The Basic Bookshelf for Eyecare Professionals Series.
"This second edition incorporates new technologies and is therefore an important addition. It is an excellent learning guide for ancillary personnel involved in providing cursory refractive procedures."
