About the Author

Karen Gardner has been a health care editor for more than 25 years as editor of Trustee magazine since 1989 and, prior to that, as executive editor of periodicals for the Joint Commission. Before entering the health care field, Gardner edited several legal publications. Gardner writes a monthly column in Trustee, has published numerous articles in the magazine, and is the editor of a book on quality in hospice care published by the Joint Commission, as well as the first edition of The Excellent Board (Health Forum, 2003). She is also the editor of Better CEO-Board Relations: Practical Advice for a Successful Partnership (Health Forum, 2007). Gardner shepherded a major redesign of Trustee in 1995, and under her editorial direction, the magazine has won a number of editorial and graphic awards from the Society of National Association Publications (including a Gold Award for General Excellence), from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, and from the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors. Gardner received a master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) English from the University of Chicago, and before entering the editorial field, taught English at the high school and middle school levels in Chicago.
