A history and bitter criticism of US farm price policies by an experienced commodity trader. He proposes a restoration of the family farm. His work is unsubstantiated by bibliographic citations. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

Ulrich, a professional commodities trading advisor with wide experience in the media, has written a very basic and easy-to-read analysis of the causes and treatment of America's farm problems. Unfortunately, it is neither a balanced nor scholarly treatment. The author presents some data and no primary or secondary studies or any other authoritative sources in support of his theses. Ulrich argues that the root cause of the farm crisis has been the shortsightedness of policy makers in Washington who have focused on solving immediate problems while ignoring the long-term implications of their solutions. It is difficult to accept this thesis in light of Ulrich's questionable interpretation of historical events, his imprecise use of the term "the market," and his unwillingness to place blame for the crisis with the farmers themselves. Written in a conversational tone, this book is best suited to a general audience.
