With a computer paint or drawing program, a printer, crayons, and a little imagination, kids can explore the world of color and the endless design possibilities of a computer by crafting multi-media art. This four-color activity book combines this tool of today with an old favorite—the crayon. Kids will learn how to print out and paint a picture frame; use a mouse to create a Matisse masterpiece; create a kite of rainbow colors; and more while learning about primary, secondary, and complementary colors. Crayons and Computers includes ideas to extend crayon creations beyond the confines of paper and into cyberspace.

Carol Sabbeth is the author of Kids’ Computer Creations, Mousetracks, and Computer Crafts for Kids. She has taught kids’ computer arts and crafts and now leads kids’ computer workshops for educators.
PreSchool-Grade 4AThe author of Kids' Computer Creations (Williamson, 1995) offers more than 50 craft and project ideas. Instructions require a PC or Mac with a color monitor, any type of printer, and the software Windows Paintbrush, Mac ClarisWorks, or Kid Pix. Children use a computer to draw an outline or picture, print it, and then add color or decoration with crayons, paints, or markers. The activities are interesting and challenging and creativity is encouraged. These ideas could easily be incorporated in the classroom to combine computers, art, and literacy. Older children could work independently on these mixed-media projects but younger children would need adult assistance. There is an interesting section on famous artists such as Monet, Seurat, and Van Gogh and their use of color, with instructions for creating pictures in their styles. Museum and zoo Web sites are included, along with instructions on using e-mail to send your own picture to a friend. Each activity has a list of the supplies needed, step-by-step instructions, and helpful black-and-white drawings.AMarion F. Gallivan, Gannon University, Erie, PA
