Reviews

This condensed version of A Big Jewish Book ( LJ 2/1/78) makes a new statement to devotees of the original, and at one-third the size it is also more accessible to new readers. Included are seven new pieces, newly translated material, and an expanded introduction. The greatest change occurs in Rothenberg's running commentary, which, like the selections retained, emphasizes the concept of Jewish exile. Given the events in Palestine, Rothenberg believes "that 'exile' is central to our fate as humans, that it is political as much as spiritual." Since the majority of omissions were from modern poets, translations from the Zohar and other mystical texts appear in closer juxtaposition, and those contemporary writers retained speak more closely to the editors' esoteric, controversial, yet fascinating views. Recommended for Judaica and larger poetry collections.
