From School Library Journal:
Grade 9-12 One of the best of the recent spate of books for young people on AIDS. With the same frank and non-patronizing style that characterized her popular sex education manuals, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys (1984) and What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls (1983, both Newmarket), Madaras outlines both the misconceptions and the facts about AIDS that will set teenagers free of both generalized anxiety and of a sense of invulnerability. She includes enough statistics and information about research to use for reports, but mainly intends to caution sexually active teens. Clear line drawings show a condom on an erect penis and a needle in an arm. The comprehensive appendixes include an annotated bibliography, including where to write for free pamphlets; a film and video list; how to get tested for AIDS antibodies; state-by-state hotlines; and how to join the PWA Memorial Bracelet program. Madaras lists the reasons to choose sexual abstinence, but is nonjudgmental about those for whom this is not the choice. A rare factor in a book for teens is the recommendation of sexual techniques that do not include intercourse. Madaras urges concerned teens to get involved in the social movement combatting AIDS. Her no-nonsense approach should convince teens of their own personal stakes in this matter. Anne Osborn, Riverside Public Library, Calif.

From Publishers Weekly:
The author of the What's Happening to My Body? addresses one of the most important issues of this decadethe spread of AIDS. As in her other books, Madaras's tone is chatty and chummy, her chapters crammed with up-to-date information. Rumors are tested against facts, origins explored, symptoms and risk factors elucidated, etc., but best of all is the point of view: she counsels readers to think in terms of risky behavior , not risk groups, and suggests sexual alternatives to intercourse. She is decidedly practical in her approach, reminding teens to take the long view when considering having sex ("Ask yourself if you honestly think the two of you will be together a year from now") and gives lines and techniques for avoiding peer pressure about sex and drugs. Each new AIDS book for teens offers updated information; Madaras includes the average time for symptom development (eight years), an admonishment not to share pierced earrings, a discussion of how a few health workers contracted the disease, among other topics. While stressing abstinence, this compellingly honest and mature book nonetheless offers teens as much help with sexual activity as possible (e.g., illustrations of how to put on a condom and discussion of how it can be incorporated into lovemaking). Kudos to Madaras for this finely attuned volume. Ages 12-up.
