Is stress gender-specific? Witkin's answer in this update of her popular book ( LJ 3/1/84) is a resounding "yes." She combines all the latest buzzwords (e.g., biological clock, premenstrual syndrome, PMS, post-traumatic stress disorder, "permission" to validate one's inner feelings, etc.) with recommendations for how women can cope with stress. Her glossary includes terms such as "mutual child" and "spousify." Any special stresses which older women facing aging, illness, and death experience are relegated to a few paragraphs. Witkin's premise that women are subjected to a double-dose of stress unfortunately reinforces the conviction of those who believe that female physiology disqualifies women from assuming high-level, decision-making positions. However, her book will have wide appeal to young and middle-aged women, who will identify with the folksy descriptions of their problems.
