A meticulous portrait of the Stalinist era. -- New York Newsday
Well-written, highly informative and graced with some of the best photographs that I have seen...invaluable. --Jay P. Corrin, Ph.D,. Boston University
When this book came out the Communist state was on its way out in the USSR and eastern Europe. Stalin, the dictator who was responsible for millions of deaths and millions more committed to economic slavery, was a good topic for a film. The movie Inner Circle is about a man who becomes Stalin's personal projectionist. The book Inner Circle is about Alexander Ganshin, the man who the movie is based and who really did live through those terrible times. This book illustrates what life was like for Soviets living under Stalin's cult of personality and the Terror. Stalin was the absolute dictator of the largest country in the world, eliminating hundreds of people by his personal order, purging thousands of Red Army officers and declaring certaing categories of people "enemies of the State" and even evacuated whole nationalities during WWII. His cult of personality, made possible by absolute control of the media, portrayed him as a strong leader who could do no wrong. This book is not an in-depth study of the Stalin years... no statistics or secret Kremlin documents here... but it is well-illustrated with period photographs and includes many first-hand accounts of those times. --By James D. Crabtree
