Reviews

The still-frame smooching of stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis should attract browsers, who will also be greeted with images of the society folk of New York's Gilded Age and hoop-skirted, corset-choked, buxom women painted by Sargent and Tissot. Other resplendent decorations include photos of Fifth Avenue, contemporaneous dicta on etiquette, excerpts from Edith Wharton's novel, and, of course, the verbatim script of the movie. The album concludes with the inevitable prattle concerning how Scorsese's movie came to be. This is flashy PR for the flick, however beautifully done; librarians will have to weigh intensely ephemeral general interest against the pull of the film over time. Gilbert Taylor

This luscious volume, a companion to the recently released film The Age of Innocence , offers an inside view of its production from the director and the screenwriter. The book is divided into four sections. The first, filled with turn-of-the-century quotes and photos and full-color renditions of paintings by Whistler and Sargent, evokes the period in which the movie is set. The second contains the complete screenplay with stills from the film as well as photos of the filming process. The third is a list of 22 films that the authors feel influenced them while they made The Age of Innocence. Finally, there is a section of quotes from the cast and crew members. This glorious celebration of the film is simply beautiful to look at. Expect demand where the film has been popular.
