As part of President Johnson's War on Poverty, VISTA volunteers in the 1960s began fanning out across the United States to try to break the cycle of poverty in which many Americans were caught. This work takes a close look at the effect these volunteers had on Arkansas communities and, in turn, the effect the communities had on the volunteers.

Illustrated throughout with B&W photographs. Pages clean, unmarked, binding tight and square. Grass-green boards, black lettering, clean, bright, a little shelf-wear to extremities. DJ mostly clean, colors bright, two short [1/4'] tears, minor edge wear, faint stain from label removal by PO at lightly sunned spine. This book takes a look at the effect VISTA volunteers had on Arkansas communities and, in turn, the effect the communities had on the volunteers. They lived in selected areas for a year or more, learning first hand about poverty, and struggling to eradicate it. In many cases, neither the volunteers nor the community would ever be the same.
