John A. Murray is one of America's best loved natural-history writers. He is the author of twenty-six books, including such acclaimed works as Out Among the Wolves and A Republic of Rivers. A life member of The Nature Conservancy, he lives in Denver, Colorado.
One of a series of nature anthologies published in collaboration with the Nature Conservancy, this book is intended to introduce readers to the beauty and value of the coastal environment. Murray, the author of several nature books, has chosen a broad range of well-written selections, from Darwin to the present and the Gal pagos to New England, covering science and fishing, politics and poetry, Henry Beston, Mark Twain, and Rachel Carson. This is both great summer reading and an excellent introduction for students of coastal ecology. Unfortunately, except for an introduction and brief notes on contributors, there are no source citations and very little context for the selections, making it difficult for the newly intrigued reader to move deeper. Recommended for school or public libraries with little or no material on coastlines and few of the original works.AMargaret A. Rioux, MBL/WHOI Lib., Woods Hole, MA
