Winner of the 1995 Juniper Prize for Poetry. David Shapiro wrote: "We have in Vogelsang a poet furious with history but attempting a mad escape. It's a swollen poetry, maximal at the least and packed with his rare rage. Sexual, sizzling really, and full of indestructible stories of fragility."

About the Author:
Arthur Vogelsang's two previous books of poetry are A Planet and Twentieth Century Women. He has been an editor of The American Poetry Review since 1973. His awards include a poetry writing fellowship from the California Arts Council and three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships.
Review:
"Vogelsang's newest poems are rich and complicated, yes, and altogether alluring in their pursuit of the runaway beast known as Love or Life or whatever alias the elusive essence of us all masquerades in when it taunts us to listen-up on moonlit nights. These poems refuse simple answers or solutions and yet, in the face of myriad contradictions, they are their own best coherent and meaningful reply. Cities and Towns is a feast of serious surprises."―James Tate

"We have in Vogelsang a poet furious with history but attempting a mad escape. It's a swollen poetry, maximal at the least and packed with his rare rage. Sexual, sizzling really, and full of indestructible stories of fragility. Local as Pop art, it has international shadows. Everything in Vogelsang's science fictive realist city is demotic, properly tilted, and glowing. It reminds us that skin and light are a pun in Hebrew, and that, as has been noted, poetry was invented to describe this red flesh. The stories are ardent; the double binds are musical. The museums in his poetry are perturbed or disturbed spaces, and the language of surveillance and trembling is upon us: the poetics of a panicked or manic Kafka."―David Shapiro
