Review:
Rather than look at the leaders or battles, as previous volumes of Civil War Journal have done, this third and final volume considers the impact of the war on American culture and society. It is a wide-ranging survey, encompassing considerations of everything from the end of slavery to the creation of Arlington National Cemetery, from Matthew Brady's photojournalism to innovations in combat medicine. The book is richly illustrated with photographs and drawings, and quotations from various commentators in the History Channel's Civil War Journal series are incorporated seamlessly into the text.
About the Author:
William Davis writes prolifically on the Civil War and has been an editor of American History Illustrated and Civil War Times Illustrated. He was a consultant on The Blue and the Gray television miniseries and the historical consultant on The History Channel's Civil War Journal. His many writings include biographies of Jefferson Davis and John C. Breckinridge, The Battle of New Market, Duel between the First Ironclads, Battle at Bull Run, The Orphan Brigade, The Image of War, The Imperiled Union, Civil War Parks, and Touched by Fire. He lives in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

Brian C. Pohanka is a frequent lecturer and consultant for film and television productions on the Civil War, including Gettysburg and Andersonville. He was the series consultant to the History Channel's Civil War Journal. Pohanka is one of the nation's leading authorities on the life of the common soldier of the Civil War and is captain of the Fifth New York Zouaves living history organization. He is the author of Distant Thunder: A Photographic Essay on the American Civil War, The Civil War: An aerial Portrait, and Don Troiani's Civil War. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia.

Don Troiani is acclaimed for the accuracy, drama, and sensitivity of his depictions of the American past. His work is included in the collections of the National Park Service, West Point Military Academy, Parks of Canada, the Pentagon, and the Smithsonian. His Illustrations have appeared on the cover of Gettysburg magazine, in American Heritage and Smithsonian magazines, in television productions for NBC, CNN, A&E, and The History Channel. He is the military and art consultant for The History Channel's Civil War Journal. A collection of his art was published as Don Troiani's Civil War.
