Does the leopard live in Africa and the jaguar in South America, or is it the other way around? How do you tell them apart, anyway? This book explores some of the lookalikes found in the animal kingdom, and explains the apparent similarities and the all-important differences. Full-color illustrations.

Grade 2-4-An interesting concept and attractive presentation that addresses questions children often ask. Twelve of nature's "confusables"-animals with similar physical characteristics (e.g., alligator/crocodile, jaguar/leopard, sea lion/seal, sharks/dolphins)-are presented on facing, softly shaded, pastel pages. Each lifelike illustration, done in natural tones, depicts an animal with its name in bold type, a simple caption, and text that explains why it is often misidentified. Insert drawings show specific physical characteristics such as the shape of a head or skin pattern. (However, in the case of the camel/dromedary, the insert features two different groups of people who use the domesticated creatures.) Facts are not overwhelming but do present comparisons of habitats, diets, and behaviors. Unfortunately, finding specific answers is difficult as there is no index or contents page, leaving this a book for those who enjoy browsing the animal section.
