This work describes the paintings of Felix Vallotton, a key member of the Nabi brotherhood, comprising Bonnard, Denis and Vuillard, all of whom were active in fin-de-siecle Paris. It also covers the way his style was related to the neue Sachlichkeit in Germany and to dadaism and surrealism.

Published to accompany a large traveling exhibition organized by Yale curator Newman, this catalog is also the best work in English on Vallotton (1865-1925), a Swiss artist active in Paris from the 1880s and a member of the Nabi group. Seven essays by various authors cover the full range of Vallotton's career, giving weight to his later paintings as well as the pre-1900 woodcuts for which he is best known. More than an exhibition catalog, this is a strong and useful survey of an undervalued artist for both special and general collections. Highly recommended.
