This biography of Maíread Corrigan and Betty Williams, winners of the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize, proves that ordinary people, united in a common desire for peace, can transform their nation and their world.
Born into hard-working families in the Catholic section of Belfast, Corrigan and Williams grew up amid the suspicion and bloodshed familiar to most residents of Northern Ireland. But when the violence that had torn their country apart for decades touched their own lives, these two "ordinary" women knew they had to fight for peace. The grassroots movement they led brought Catholics and Protestants together in nonviolent marches and demonstrations that drew tens of thousands of people and showed the world that Northern Ireland was yearning for peace.

Grade 7 Up-Corrigan and Williams helped create a grassroots peace movement in Ireland. They met in August 1976, shortly after Corrigan's niece and two nephews were killed as a result of sectarian violence. They collected signatures on petitions calling for a halt to the violence, organized and spoke at peace rallies all over Ireland and Europe, and started a group called the Peace People. They were awarded the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts. Written in clear prose, this volume chronicles the events that brought these two women "to mobilize hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world to work toward an end to the violence in Northern Ireland." Sidebars provide additional background on the Potato Famine, Irish Americans, "Bloody Sunday," and the history of the Nobel Peace Prize. Small, often dark or grainy black-and-white photos are scattered throughout. Unfamiliar terms are explained in context as well as in a brief glossary. While the book may be useful for reports, it is not likely that it will have a wide audience.
