Book by Hoh, Lavahn G., Rough, William H.

The authors have endeavored to include all facets of the circus, from the expected--history, types of acts, and stars--to the unexpected--the influence of the circus on our language and the arts, travel logistics, and children's circuses. John Culhane's The American Circus: An Illustrated History ( LJ 2/15/90) covers the history of the circus in greater depth, but it is in the seldom-covered topics that the real value of this book lies. The index is excellent for proper names, but less useful for locating general topics. Clown schools and high wire, for example, are not included, although oddities like "ancient roots of circus" are. Recommended for all libraries having patrons interested in the circus. -- Anne Twitchell, EPA Headquarters Lib., Washington,
