Reviews

Cronin, founder of The Raskob Learning Institute, has worked with dyslexic children for many years. Here, she offers a straightforward overview of dyslexia: what it is, how dyslexics differ from other children, how to diagnose dyslexia, and how parents can help their dyslexic children. After opening chapters that define the problem and provide advice on when parents should seek further help, Cronin concentrates on the school-aged child who needs help in adopting a learning style after a diagnosis of dyslexia is made. Exercises to practice with a child and case studies enhance the text. Final chapters deal with adolescent and adult dyslexics. Appendixes include a glossary, bibliography, list of support groups, and supplemental material for use with home exercises. Recommended for public and community college libraries.

Confusion over the term dyslexia--a dysfunction that affects a person's ability to learn to read, spell, and do math problems--is common, because dyslexia also affects nonacademic areas of a person's life and the level of dysfunction varies extensively between individuals. Cronin offers definitions, suggests how to have the situation evaluated for children and adults, and outlines specific teaching and coping mechanisms. An excellent resource for parents and educators, particularly because it tackles extracurricular as well as academic issues. Denise Perry Donavin
