Grade 7 Up-In these appealing, well-illustrated biographies, the authors present a blend of information, culled from the subjects' writings and from other primary and secondary sources. The books include bibliographical notes for quotations used, as well as lists for further reading and of works consulted. Their tone is matter-of-fact and objective, tempered with a hint of admiration, but never dull, partisan, or condescending. Each title is arranged chronologically and commences with a helpful listing of the important dates in its subject's life. In Sadat, Diamond fleshes out the common view of Sadat as martyred peacemaker by noting that some scholars disagree with this assessment of him and explaining why. In Cleopatra, Nardo makes use of Roman writings, especially those of Dio Cassius and Plutarch, and of modern scholars. He includes coverage of Cleopatra's romantic and sexual depiction in literature, art, music, drama, and motion pictures. In Mead, Tilton discusses the scientist's life and important contributions to anthropology, her three marriages and divorces, as well as recent attacks upon her methodology and reputation, but refrains from sensationalizing these topics.
