Reviews

Grade 6-12-Two of the most surprising events in late 20th century are chronicled with clarity and objectivity in these attractive, well-organized titles. Smith begins with a brief summary of Karl Marx's theories, the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, and Soviet leadership through the decades. After giving an overview of the Cold War, she moves on to the Gorbachev years, the 1991 breakup of the USSR, and the uncertainty of the future world order. Yancey provides a background summary of post-World War II Germany and tells the story of the nation's efforts to balance its Eastern and Western economies and ideologies since reunification. The information in both texts is basically accurate; Smith's book does contain a misleading statement about the removal of Lenin's body from his tomb. Reunification includes undated maps of "prewar" and "Cold War" Germany that erroneously imply that Austria did not exist until after World War II. Otherwise, the books are readable and lively; both are liberally illustrated with black-and-white photos and political cartoons.
