The nation of England has made many tangible contributions to Western culture, politics, government and the arts. It also holds intangible appeal as the setting of the valiant deeds of the legendary King Arthur and the authentic Richard the Lionheart.

Gr 7 Up--This introduction to the nation's history and heritage is full of reliable facts packaged in a compact and easily accessible format complemented by apt, black-and-white illustrations, maps, and photographs. The content is arranged in six theme-based chapters, all framed by the informative introduction and epilogue. Sidebars add textual snapshots of various items of interest, such as the legend of Hengist and Horsa, the six wives of Henry VIII, the development of the National Trust, and the national passion for gardening. Attractive typography and artful use of white space throughout enhance the book's readability. Lace brings to the volume the balanced scholarship, judiciously chosen quotations, and well-crafted prose that distinguished his Battle of Hastings (Lucent, 1996). His presentation is notable for its sustained and clearly stated viewpoint that England has fallen from a "leading role" to becoming a "supporting player" internationally, but nevertheless remains important due to the worldwide influence of its rich language and culture. In addition, the annotated suggestions for further reading and list of works consulted provide pointed and useful critical summaries. Overall, a good resource for students ready to move on from encyclopedia articles and simple fact lists or time lines to "real" history that presents factual information within a well-defined point of view.
