Grade 6-9-Lace does a commendable job here of explaining the whys of the long-running hostilities, and of giving a well-balanced presentation of the issues and personalities involved. While written in an easy-to-follow manner, the text never sidesteps thought-provoking issues. Thus, readers are challenged with ideas such as how much of the decision to go to war was simply because the kings enjoyed battle? And, while judiciously describing aspects of their personalities, the author does not attach simple "saint" or "lunatic" labels to the complex figures of Joan of Arc or King Edward III. Cause-and-effect aspects of rulers, battles, and the Peasant Revolt are also discussed in a clear, yet appropriate style. Especially well done is the lucid way in which the aftermath of events is explained. A time line, appendixes portraying the lineage of the kings of France and England, and an annoted bibliography add to the usability of this title.
