Gr 7 Up--In this updated look at the Kennedy assassination and the controversies that continue to surround it, Pietrusza begins by examining the fateful trip to Dallas and the details of the shooting, and then discusses Lee Harvey Oswald's strange life and the many weaknesses of the Warren Commission Report. The author also includes chapters on the major conspiracy theories that have been explored over the years, including Jim Garrison's investigation, the intelligence-agency theory, the Mafia theory, and the scenarios presented in the Oliver Stone film JFK. He concludes with a review of the new evidence presented in Gerald Posner's Case Closed (Random, 1993). Pietrusza is objective throughout, describing the strengths and weaknesses of both the popular theories and the official investigations. Although he includes background material, most readers will need at least some prior knowledge to understand the complex information he presents. Sidebars about various people and events and numerous black-and-white photos and illustrations add interest and details. The book is not as well-organized and well-written as Jeffrey Waggoner's The Assassination of President Kennedy (Greenhaven, 1989). However, it is more current and includes details and evidence that were not available in the earlier titles.
