Grade 7-10-Do police have and use too much power? Should children who commit murder be tried as adults? Does the death penalty really deter crime? Many of the attitudes commonly held by U.S. citizens are expressed in this evenhanded examination of the rights of individuals vs. the rights of society. Also, differing ideas concerning gun control and the effectiveness of mandatory sentences are addressed. Actual events, such as the Columbine shootings, link opinions to real-life situations. While no book this size can thoroughly present every aspect of these complex issues, most of the significant ones are brought to the fore. Black-and-white photographs accompany the text while charts and graphs provide relevant statistics and political cartoons highlight opinions. Chapter notes cite periodical and media reportage. A directory of organizations, including conservative groups such as The Heritage Foundation and the National Rifle Association, is particularly useful. The list provides contact information and Web site addresses plus clear descriptions of each group's goals and functions.
