Grade 6-10-An excellent, comprehensive introduction to anorexia and bulimia, especially as they affect adolescents. Dangers, treatment, and prevention are discussed in depth. Compulsive eating (without purging) is touched on briefly. Vollstadt makes much of cultural pressures to be thin, pointing to advertising and fashion as particular culprits that push abnormal body images for young people. The text is highlighted by celebrity anecdotes, and sources are well documented. Black-and-white photos occasionally break up the text; only the full-color cover photograph portrays a shockingly thin anorexic. The emphasis is on information and help, not sensationalism.
