Grade 7 Up-Finally, a mature and intelligent treatment of a complex nation. Grabowski examines the history, land, and people of Canada and discusses its current state of affairs and place in the world today. The introductory essay, entitled "The Search for an Identity," is interesting and thoughtful. It outlines some of this nation's central challenges and sets the tone for a balanced examination of its history and people up until Quebec's separation referendum of 1995. The chapter on culture includes many references to current personalities and performing artists in addition to historical figures. Clear black-and-white maps, reproductions, and photographs enhance the text. In addition, sidebars explain specific historical events or present brief biographies and additional information on the culture. The book concludes with an examination of challenges facing the country today. For some unexplained reason, an explanation of the federal parliamentary system is included in this chapter. This title will be useful for researchers, especially those unfamiliar with the country's politics. The best book on the subject, for all ages, is Canada, published annually by Statistics Canada.
