Review

"A concise overview filled with black-and-white photographs of sites and artwork from around the world."
-- School Library Journal (July 2001) (School Library Journal 20020701)

"Although the list of topics for this series may be nebulous, the treatment is serious and steeped in solid research. This work would be suitable for a research topic or appealing to reluctant readers. There are frequent appearances of b&w photographs. Works consulted. Index. Further reading section. Recommended."
-- The Book Report (September-October 2002) (Book Report 20010501)

"The index is finely detailed, and halftones and simple diagrams clarify textual descriptions. A good choice for students who seek a volume that does not have the appearance of a picture book."
-- School Library Journal (July 2002) (School Library Journal )

"A research-oriented overview...offers the latest opinions in addition to early research results. The annotated list for further reading contains well-chosen titles, the earliest of which was published in 1995, and the compilation of works consulted offers a wide variety of opinions. This is an excellent, up-to-date supplement to older and more sensational accounts."
--School Library Journal (May 2001) (School Library Journal )

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-The first book traces the origins and development of witchcraft back to ancient goddess worship and healing herbalists. The text documents the subsequent demonization and persecution of witches in Christian Europe during the Middle Ages and during the Salem witch trials. Although Milton Meltzer's Witches and Witch-hunts (Scholastic, 1999) offers a more thorough history of the subject, Kallen's book devotes significant space to a discussion of the beliefs and practices of modern Wiccans. Haunted Houses gives only cursory attention to well-known apparitions and mysterious places such as Borley Rectory in England and the infamous house in Amityville, NY. Discussions of photographic techniques and fakery reveal Netzley's generally skeptical attitude toward the paranormal. Still, some poltergeist cases and the intensely investigated activities of medium Eileen Garrett are included as examples of possibly real phenomena. Chapter notes, annotated bibliographies, and detailed indexes make both volumes readily accessible resources on these often-examined subjects. Interesting sidebars and frequent black-and-white photos and reproductions add to the appeal of these straightforward series entries.
