Arthur Newhall has a unique and a varied background in the fields of lettering and graphic design. His work has included theater lobby displays, movie titles, sign painting, advertising art, lettering for reproduction, type designing, and art for screen printing. He has also worked as art director for an advertising agency. These varied disciplines have all added to the refinement of his calligraphy skills.
Newhall was one of the innovators of one of the most spectacular letter styles ever created--the Cartoon Casual--as well as a Modern Script of the 1940s and 1950s. A stickler for precision and style, he is always ready to help the novice as well as the professional. Newhall has also authored a book for intermediate, and advanced students, Calligraphy and Lettering Design, which is part of Walter Foster's Artist's Library series.
